The project 'Künstlerische Intelligenz: Eine künstlerische Untersuchung des Einflusses von KI-Assistenten auf den Schaffensprozess' ('Artistic Intelligence: An Artistic Inquiry into the Influence of AI Assistants on the Creative Process'), which formed part of my graduation paper, delves into the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the realm of artistic expression. There is a distinct emphasis on AI serving as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for the artist's creative agency. The study aims to investigate how AI, specifically AI assistants, can bring new perspectives and inspiration to the process of artistic production.

Central to this exploration is the examination of how AI can expand and enrich the creative process while simultaneously addressing the challenges and risks associated with its integration. An AI model named Skulpture_1, specially trained for this project using 34 photos of previous artworks, plays a pivotal role. Through this training, Skulpture_1 learned to recognize and interpret aesthetic patterns and structures within sculptures, subsequently generating new ideas and concepts based on this understanding.

The objective of this training was to imbue Skulpture_1 with an understanding of aesthetic preferences and empower it to recognize and reproduce similar visual elements in various contexts, thereby facilitating creative impulses and inspirations for artistic production.

The investigation into the impact of AI assistants on the creative process of artists reveals a spectrum of insights encompassing both positive and negative aspects.

On one hand, collaboration with AI assistants significantly facilitated the process of ideation and unveiled new avenues for artistic expression. The AI assistant served as an inspiring partner, accelerating the creative flow and leading to enhanced productivity and innovative approaches in art production. However, deliberations on potential negative aspects of working with AI assistants also emerged.

A critical concern was the possible dilution of the original, subjective character and nature of artistic work due to the influence of AI assistants. Overreliance on AI could compromise control over the creative process and impinge upon the individual expression of artists. Additionally, risks of dependence on AI in ideation and artistic design were highlighted. While AI assistants are intended to support, they should not supplant the artist's independent creative contribution. Excessive reliance on AI could lead to neglect of one's artistic intuition and originality.

Künstlerische Intelligenz (2023-2024)

An exhibition, hosted at Das Fenster in Greifswald, presents a curated collection of artworks that explore the intersection of traditional sculpture and artificial intelligence. Four sculptures, crafted as part of the project "Künstlerische Intelligenz: Eine künstlerische Untersuchung des Einflusses von KI-Assistenten auf den Schaffensprozess," take center stage in this thought-provoking display. This exhibition is linked to the preceding research, offering insight into the project's findings. By showcasing the sculptures alongside their AI-inspired counterparts, the exhibition aims to elucidate the transformative influence of artificial intelligence on the artistic process. Visitors are invited to explore the evolution of ideas and forms, as well as the symbiotic relationship between artist and machine.
